Zanker returns as mayor for 12 months
Councillor Kylie Zanker is set to once again lead the Yarriambiack Shire Council for the next 12 months as mayor, with Cr Andrew McLean stepping into the role of deputy mayor.
At council's statutory meeting on Wednesday morning, councillors met to elect the new mayor and decide on the role of deputy mayor.
Councillors were sworn in on October 23, as each ward was uncontested, allowing them to carry on with their duties.
Returning councillors are joined by newcomer Cr Melinda Keel, representing the Dunmunkle ward, replacing Tom Hamilton.
Cr Zanker and Cr McLean both accepted nominations as mayor for one year, with each receiving three votes, leaving the decision up to the lot.
This resulted in Cr McLean being eliminated and Cr Zanker stepping back into the role as mayor.
“I would like to say thank you to my fellow councillors. I believe that when we have a three and three vote like that, it clearly shows we do have a strong leadership team and I know we will move forward and work harmoniously together," Cr Zanker said.
“Congratulations to Cr McLean, I look forward to working with you, as I do my fellow councillors as well."
It was put to council to determine if an office for a deputy mayor should be established. In the last term, council chose not to reinstate the role of deputy mayor.
Cr Zanker moved the motion to establish an office for a deputy mayor and was seconded by Cr Corinne Heintze.
"Previously we've had seven councillors and I believe we will need the role of deputy mayor going back to six councillors," Cr Zanker said.
"Also for the advocacy for our communities going forward, I believe a deputy mayor will be a great asset to our council."
The role of deputy mayor saw Cr Karly Kirk and Cr McLean being nominated by their fellow councillors.
Again, both received three votes each and the final decision was taken to the lot with Cr McLean being deemed deputy mayor.
Council will meet next on November 27, at 9.30am in the Warracknabeal council chambers located on Lyle Street.
