Work an eye opening experience
Year 10 Students from the Wimmera Lutheran College have stepped out of the classroom and into the workforce this week as part of the school's annual work experience program, gaining a hands-on taste of professional life across a range of local industries.
Warracknabeal's Harper Benton-Huebner and Horsham's Edward Jones worked with the Warracknabeal hospital, gaining a further understanding of the overall procedures and protocols under the supervision of Leiah McKenzie.
Harper strives to become a pediatric nurse in hopes of helping people.
She was rapt with how much she had enjoyed her time at the hospital.
"It's been fun, and I'm very excited to see what's coming next for me," she said.
While she enjoyed her experience, there were some unexpected hurdles.
"I didn't expect to be doing the theory behind their processes so much.”
While Harper became more involved in the nursing aspect of things, Edward focused on the radiology side, engaging in interactive activities such as observing how X-rays and ultrasounds work and caring for older people.
Edward said he aspired to a future in the healthcare system, considering his family tradition.
"The Warracknabeal hospital was very calm, and it taught me how flexibility is key in this sort of industry, especially when I have to travel out to remote areas to help the elderly, but I enjoy it," he said.
"It's been fun getting to see behind the scenes of the hospital.”
Warracknabeal's Noah Eilola focused on the features of the childcare industry through hands-on activities, including participating in group-based activities, sharing meals, and interacting with the children of the Warracknabeal Memorial kindergarten.
Noah strives to become more involved in the childcare industry with the aspiration of helping young ones develop and acquire new skills.
"I was honestly surprised with how cooperative and kind the children were to me," he said.
"Coming back to Warracknabeal Memorial Kindergarten is a possibility for me as I just love seeing the kids learn and adapt to new skills."
