Wizard of Oz: behind the yellow brick road
Horsham Arts Council is celebrating 60 years of local theatre. From moving sets to local design work, The Wizard of Oz is showcasing the creativity and talent of the Horsham community.
For 60 years, the Horsham Arts Council has mesmerised audiences across the region with stellar, local productions.
This year, HAC is presenting The Wizard of Oz, a show perfect for all ages.
Debbie Boutcher, assistant director, costume designer, and co-ordinator, said it’s been wonderful working with such a committed cast and crew.
“Everyone’s dedication has been wonderful,” Ms Boutcher said.
“Committing to months of rehearsals is no easy task.”
Two real dogs are making their debut performance on the local stage, with Buddy and Loki filling the role of Dorothy’s loyal companion, Toto.
These perfect pooches remind us that even the tiniest of friends can have the biggest impact.
Ms Boutcher has confirmed that Buddy and Loki have been delightful to work with.
“Both of the dogs are so different in their personalities,” she said.
“From an animal welfare standpoint, production sets can be overwhelming.
"We are using two dogs for the production. This allows us to rotate them, keeping them relaxed and comfortable.”
This production is also special for Debbie because three generations of her family are coming together to be a part of this show.
Her daughter, Erin Boutcher, is the show's director, and her grandson, Larson Versteegen, aged six, is playing one of the Munchkins.
Local creatives have been utilised for this production, with the majority of the sets being built through the collaborative efforts of Chris Versteegen and Will Lynch.
Horsham's Tom Miatke created the poster, program, and projection design.
“The set is not a static set,” Ms Boutcher said.
“We have lots of moving components on the stage to help the show flow effortlessly.”
Bringing together local talent on and off stage, The Wizard of Oz promises a celebration of family, community, and creativity.
