Winter appeal launched
Locals are being urged to donate essential winter items as part of Uniting's annual Wimmera Winter Appeal.
As temperatures drop, many families and individuals across the region will be forced to spend winter in freezing conditions, whether they’re rough sleeping on the streets or can't heat their homes due to cost-of-living pressures.
Katrina Scimone, Manager, Uniting Vic.Tas - Wimmera said no one is immune to rising costs, but it's always the people most vulnerable in the community who are hardest hit, especially during the colder months.
"For many, warmth is a luxury that they simply can’t afford," Ms Scimone said.
Uniting is experiencing an increase in demand for people seeking support across its services as people and families reach breaking point in 2026.
“We’re seeing more people pushed to the edge,” Ms Scimone said.
“More people are experiencing homelessness, while others are being faced with impossible choices such as heating their homes, paying rent, putting food on the table or putting fuel in their cars.”
Along with essential winter items, donations of money are also welcome.
A donation of $30 can provide the essentials someone needs to stay warm this winter, such as a new blanket or jacket.
“Every contribution matters,” Ms Scimone said.
“What might feel small to one person can make a huge difference to someone facing winter without warmth.”
