Wimmera council explores options to address housing shortages 'head on'
WWSC looks to secure funding to address region housing shortage.
Facing a critical housing shortage that's straining families, workers, and businesses, the West Wimmera Shire Council is exploring viable solutions.
Council chief executive David Bezuidenhout said several barriers to investing in housing in the region existed, but the council was committed to finding innovative solutions to alleviate the housing pressures in the community.
"Housing is one of the most significant challenges facing our community," he said.
"Without enough homes, we can't attract or retain the workers and families we need to grow and thrive."
The council recognises the critical need for additional housing and has been working with stakeholders over the past few years to identify ways to improve the housing supply.
To address the housing shortage, Mr Bezuidenhout said the council was investigating funding options from state and federal government bodies to invest in housing developments in the shire.
"Without enough homes, we can't attract or retain the workers and families we need to grow and thrive," he said.
"Securing external funding is a key part of that strategy."
Mr Bezuidenhout said the council would meet later this month to discuss the shire's housing needs and its plans to address the shortage.
"Council is determined to address this issue head-on," the CEO said.
