Wimmera 72 is a Wimmera Emergency Management Resource Sharing Partnership initiative that helps people prepare for the fire season ahead and is available to the public at https://wimmera72.com.au/

This vital partnership between Horsham Rural City and Hindmarsh, West Wimmera and Yarriambiack Shire Councils provides coordinated relief and recovery for all emergencies across the Wimmera.

As we head into the holiday season, the Wimmera Emergency Management Team reminds people to visit their Wimmera72 website to help them plan and prepare for emergencies.

Co-ordinator Kristi Sullivan said that while the Wimmera is a stunning part of Western Victoria, it can also be dangerous.

"As with many parts of Australia, our region is prone to bushfires, floods, heatwaves and other natural disasters," she said.

Ms Sullivan said that emergencies can occur anytime, anywhere and without warning.

"We've had significant bushfires this year and over recent years, flooding in 2022 and 2011 and a tornado in 2020," she said.

"Because it can take time for emergency services to reach people during an emergency, it's essential for everyone to be prepared and have a plan in place.

"Being prepared means having enough food, water, medication and other supplies to last at least 72 hours."

Ms Sullivan said that the Wimmera 72 website is an excellent resource for locals and visitors:

"It includes all the tools you need to be self-sufficient during an emergency in the Wimmera," she said.

"It contains important information, resources and links to a range of emergency services."
