Williams on podium again after double hat-trick
Hat-tricks don't come much more impressive than the double completed this season by Scarlette Williams. The Dimboola Primary School student has now won both the West Wimmera District and the Little Desert Division school sports cross-country events for the past three years.
As a result, on May 26 she contested the next rung up the junior athletics ladder, the Greater Western Region meet in Warrnambool – the final stage before the state championships.
In Warrnambool, Scarlette was placed third place in the three-kilometre race after finishing 11th and sixth in the two-kilometre in past years.
Her podium finish earned her a berth again this year in the Victorian School Sports State Championships on July 16 – just eight days before her 11th birthday, which she will celebrate while taking part in a Little Athletics cross country run.
In 2024 she set a new record in the West Wimmera School Sports Association 1500m, and more recently she led the field home in the 2026 Dimboola Dash Running Festival women's 10km in April.
Scarlette also competes over the shorter sprint distances and was placed just outside the top 20 in the under-11 girls' 200m at this year's Little Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships in Melbourne in March.
She had qualified by winning her age-group event at the Little Athletics Western Country Region Track and Field Championships in Warrnambool in February, where she also claimed a silver medal in the triple jump and a bronze in the 1500m.
According to her mother Stephanie Williams, Scarlette is completely focused on athletics.
"Running is her main passion," Williams said.
"She hasn’t shown an interest in things like netball, hockey etc.
"She does Little Athletics in the summer, trains in Horsham with athletics coach Ricky Price and loves the cross-country in the winter."
