The rain and cold was no barrier to the competitors of Jeparit’s 2023 Easter Fishing Competition, with a number of event records being broken across the four categories.
Volunteer Ben Zanker said they saw 30 millimetres of rain over the weekend, but the turnout was still spectacular.
“This year’s competition was the best one we had in years,” he said.
“More than 100 spectators and about 400 participants attended the competition, with visitors from four states of the country - Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.
“We had a total of 20 volunteers on the day who helped the committee organise and look after the event.”
The event saw a record 393 competitors enter, as well as the record for heaviest fish smashed by a 4712 gram carp caught by Wail’s Joanne Wolthius, and a record number of fish caught and weighed - a total of 125.
The annual fishing competition always provides a great boost for the small town’s stores
“The supermarket was full of people over the weekend, the fish n chips shop was popular, and the fuel shop and pub were also crowded,” Mr Zanker said.
“The visitors said that they enjoyed their time in the region and will come back next year.”
