Warriors soar over Demons
Stawell recorded a triumphant victory over Horsham on Saturday, with the final margin 62 points.
After the first quarter the game was on, with just a few points separating the teams.
But the Warriors had a better second term, booting 5.3 to just a couple of points from the Demons.
The Demons battled hard in the quarter after the big break but could only add another goal to the score, while Stawell increased their score by 5.3.
It was a better quarter for Horsham in the last term, booting three, while the Warriors piled on 2.7.
Final scores were the Demons 6.3 (39) to the Warriors 14.17 (101).
Better players for the sides were Jordy Schmidt and Zac Martin (Demons) and Owen Summers and Zachary Marrow (Warriors).
Goal scorers included Jasper Gunn with a couple of majors for Horsham and Cody Driscoll with four goals for Stawell.
Warriors co-coach James Sullivan said all in all, it was pleasing to get the win, but the conditions meant the game was scrappy.
"The most pleasing thing was our defensive efforts and our backs really went to work getting on top and giving us some great rebound," Sullivan said.
The spread of goal scorers was also impressive, with nine different players finding the big sticks.
"We're certainly pleased with the spread of goal kickers and not relying on too few up forward," Sullivan said.
"We've done a lot of work on forward connection so we're happy to come away with 31 shots and a good spread of those getting on the end of them."
The Warriors did record 17 points, but Sullivan said he wasn't concerned about this, considering the wind.
"Blistering conditions were pretty tough going at certain points during the game," he said, laughing.
When asked about better players, Sullivan said there were some who stood up across the entire ground.
"Better players were Zac Marrow and Owen Summers down back, Sam Williams and Sunny Brazier through the mids and then Paul Summers up forward," he said.
