Warriors power to massive win
At Natimuk Recreation Reserve, the Rams title defence got off to a horrible start. West Wimmera won by seven wickets in convincing style in the C-Grade competition in the Horsham Cricket Association.
The Rams won the toss and elected to bat, but it was the Warriors' tight bowling that troubled the Rams, as they were not able to create any solid partnerships.
Callum Cameron stood out for the Rams, scoring 27, with Liam Klowss (10) and Lachlan Hutchinson (13) the only batters to score double figures, as the Rams were bowled out for 90 in the 39th over.
It was an all-round bowling performance from the Warriors, with James Crowhurst (2/8) and Greg Trenery (2/23) the pick of the bowlers. Jobe Dickinson bowled seven overs, with six being maidens, and he finished with 1/6.
In reply, Lachlan Hutchinson bowled James Crowhurst for one, but Jobe Dickinson steered the ship for the Warriors, scoring 65 off 45 balls as they chased down the total in the 16th over, finishing 3/94.
Simon Mentz was the pick of the bowlers for the Rams, finishing with figures of 2/6 off 1.5 overs.
Mudlarks secure a convincing win
Lubeck Murtoa powered to a massive 87-run win over the Tigers at Lubeck Recreation Reserve.
The Mudlarks were one of the standout teams last season. After winning the toss and batting, they got off to a bad start, losing Darren Schultz and Sid Kingston early and falling to 2/24.
Mudlarks captain Cameron Newell steadied the ship and put on a solid 47-run partnership with Archie McQueen before McQueen fell for 12, bowled by Clayton Brown.
Drew Gellatly joined Newell at the crease and put on a solid 34-run partnership before Newell fell for 48, caught by Gavin Bown off the bowling of Blake Willis.
Gellatly saw the innings out, scoring an unbeaten 51 to guide the Mudlarks to 8/177 off their 40 overs.
Blake Willis was the pick of the bowlers for the Tigers, finishing with figures of 3/9 off seven overs.
In response, the Mudlarks' bowling was too good as they bowled the Tigers out for 90 in the 32nd over.
Ash Britton (18) and Gavin Brown's unbeaten 25 were the standouts for the Tigers with the bat.
Archie McQueen was the pick of the Mudlarks bowlers with figures of 3/22, with Darcy Schultz (2/4) and Cameron Newell (2/11) bowling well.
In the other match, Dimboola forfeited against Laharum.
