However, it would not comment on potential job losses at the Wimmera campus as part of the cost-cutting exercise to save $20 million in order to return the uni to an operating surplus.

A spokesperson told The Horsham Times on June 19 the university “remains committed to the Wimmera region and for improving access to post-secondary education”.

They said a recent expansion of courses and a new engineering learning space underlined its commitment to the Horsham campus.

“Federation University will continue to advocate for a policy framework that takes into account the unique challenges faced by regional universities,” they said.

Federation University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley, said the job losses were regrettable but necessary: “Making these decisions now means we can ensure we can continue to work with our communities across Ballarat, Berwick, Gippsland, and the Wimmera," he said.
