U3A raises $1200 for Cancer Council
U3A Horsham and District members raised $1200 for Cancer Council after hosting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea at the Railway Station Main Room on Tuesday, May 19.
The event brought together 34 local attendees, including U3A members and their friends, who supported the fundraiser through gold coin entry, raffle tickets and other contributions.
U3A publications officer Joyce Lane said the event received a strong response from the community.
“34 people turned up, U3A members brought their friends along, and we raised $1200 altogether with the raffle and the entry,” Mrs Lane said.
She said all funds raised would go directly to Cancer Council to support cancer research.
“All the money will go to Cancer Council,” she said.
Guests enjoyed a shared morning tea, with many attendees bringing plates of food to contribute.
Mrs Lane said the group had plenty of food, and the atmosphere remained positive throughout the morning.
“Most of the people brought along a plate to share,” she said.
“The response was really, really good, and everybody enjoyed it.”
The event also featured games and activities, such as word bingo and pass the parcel, which included flower-related questions and small prizes.
Mrs Lane said the activity proved popular with attendees.
“Pass the parcel went really well,” she said.
Mrs Lane said about six to eight volunteers helped organise the event, including those who managed the morning tea, the entry table, the raffle, and the prizes.
She thanked everyone who attended and supported the fundraiser, noting that cancer research remained vital to improving treatment outcomes.
“Research is a marvellous thing, because we can be treated for cancer,” she said.
“But if they don’t have the research, nobody can be treated because they don’t know how to.”
Mrs Lane said U3A Horsham and District would likely host the fundraiser again next year, after raising a similar amount last year.
“We’ll probably do it again next year, but I’ll have to think of something more interesting again,” she said.
U3A Horsham and District will next take part in Seniors Week with a stall in the plaza, before holding a car park sale in early November to raise funds for the organisation.
