Tony Caccaviello relishes new role as Western Waves region selector
Trials for the Victorian Country men's side are underway.
A menace with the bat and ball, Tony Caccaviello is now ushering in the next generation of cricketers with a new regional role.
Caccaviello is the new Western Waves region selector and is currently tasked with identifying players for the Victorian Country men's side ahead of the National Country Cricket Championships.
The veteran all-rounder, who has represented Vic Country as a player, said it was an "exciting" process to be part of.
"The whole point of the trials is to pick our best 14 players to represent Victoria, as it turns out, like every year, there are some superb country cricketers floating around," he said.
"That's one of the best parts of the country carnival; you see a high level and standard of cricket, so it's always a fantastic process.
Caccaviello said the Western Waves region covers a number of associations including Horsham Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton.
"One of the best things about it is it's not part of the more traditional pathways, for whatever reason these players haven't gone onto those pathways but the talent in country Victoria is superb," he said.
"The last time I was involved in the process was as a player, and from my experiences, it was just fantastic. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to be a selector.
"It's a superb chance to test yourself and to be in the process it's exciting, it's the top cricketers in country Victoria."
The Victorians' formal trials began on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the CitiPower Centre in St Kilda.
They will continue in Bendigo on Sunday, November 3, and Sunday, November 24, with a series of matches to determine the final squad.
Former Casey-South Melbourne batter and current Melbourne batting coach Luke Manders is the new Victorian Country men's coach.
