Tigers aiming to tame Cougars
Pimpinio’s senior football side will aim to end Kaniva Leeor’s win streak as the travel to Kaniva for round seven this Saturday May 23.
Pimpinio co-coach Cullen Williams conceded his side faced a difficult task on Saturday, rating the Cougars’ top-end talent as arguably the best in the competition.
“They seem to keep on getting better and better,” Williams said.
“They've got some very handy players.
"I think their top five or six are probably as good as, if not better than, any other team in the league.
“It’s going to be a tough game, as any game is.”
The Tigers enter the clash with a 3-2 record following an 82-52 victory over Rupanyup.
The Pimpinio coach said he was happy with how the side played in the round-six win.
“The conditions weren’t conducive to pretty footy,” Williams said
“In saying that, I was pretty pleased with the way we went into the contest and were able to keep getting the ball forward.
“Our inside 50s and our conversion were a lot better so it’s good to get that part of the game right – it was good to see.”
The last time the two teams met was in round eight last year when Kaniva Leeor comprehensively defeated the Tigers 143-54.
Despite being aware of that win, Cougars co-coach Jonno Hicks knows how dangerous Pimpinio can be.
“We rate Pimp really highly,” Hicks said.
“Their on-ball brigade is really good and they've obviously given trouble for us in the past.
“We probably played our best game for the season last year against them here at home where we got lucky that they had a couple of injuries.
“But at their best, they've got some really quality mids and some great ball users and they can really hurt you.
“They’re a quality team and they’ve played finals the last few years for a reason.
The Kaniva Leeor coach said he would like to reach their round-nine bye in a strong position.
“We really want to make sure we keep our momentum going,” Hicks said.
“It's nice to get a few wins on the trot and we've got two more games before our bye, so I really want to make sure we set up our first half of the year.
“Last year we gave ourselves a lot of work to do in the second half of the year to try to scrape into the finals.”
