Thirty years of land care
Laharum Landcare Group (LLC) is officially 30 years young. Group members celebrated its birthday with a dinner, and a visit from guest speaker Elia Pirtle, of Project Playpus.
LLC was formed in 1994 as a response to the landcare movement that had begun in 1986, as well as to some significant land management challenges.
Since then the group has been a strong advocate in multiple projects, including the Grampians to Little Desert Biolink that aimed to connect two large national parks along roadways and private property.
It has focused on salinity, pasture trials and stubble burning in the past, with the main priorities being pest plants and animals and revegetation.
Hosting weed identification days, buying a spray trailer for member use and subsidising chemical purchases are just some of the initiatives the group has carried out.
Regular working bees for landholders to physically remove priority weeds have also been held by the group.
The group has also received significant funding from the Communities for Nature Program for revegetation on private land over the past 10 years.
LLC has since purchased plants for landholders so they can undertake revegetation on their own properties.
It holds an annual plantout once a year funded through the Victorian Landcare grants.
