Thieves target school and raid clothing store
Police have warned Dimboola residents to keep their vehicles and homes secure after thieves targeted two premises in one night.
Offenders broke into Dimboola Trading Co in Lloyd Street between 5pm on Tuesday August 6 and 8.40am on Wednesday August 7.
Owner Alethea "Olly" Flodin said she noticed the top lock of her front door was unlocked when she went into work on the Wednesday morning.
"They jimmied the lock open and entered," she said.
"I noticed that a whole rack of coats were gone and we had other things missing."
Numerous items of clothing, shoes and sunglasses are believed to have been stolen.
"There were belts all over the floor," Ms Flodin said.
"They left at 4.22am. They were caught on the bank camera."
Thankfully, no valuable items were left in the store overnight and they were able to continue operating as usual.
"We're pretty lucky that we didn't have much to clean up," she said.
In a separate incident, Dimboola Memorial Secondary College's canteen on Ellerman Street was broken into around 4.45am on Wednesday August 7.
Offenders fled the scene prior to police arrival.
Principal Sally Klinge said they used forced entry which activated the alarm system.
"No one was allowed in until fingerprinting was done," she said.
"Students weren't able to purchase food during the recess but they were wonderful.
"Families were notified and it was back up and running the same day."
Ms Klinge said the incident was "very unfortunate".
"It happens and we've moved on."
Western Division Four Tasking and Coordination Senior Sergeant Cameron Ross said people should always be on the lookout for any unusual activity.
“People should make sure they are securing their cars and houses at all times," he said.
"People can have their front doors open and unlocked on nice days and if they are in the back of their home, they might not hear someone at their front door."
Snr Sgt Ross said local businesses also should make sure they have security measures in place.
"If they are unsure on what to do or would like advice, reach out to your local police station who can organise to attend their business and give them advice," he said.
"It's about helping each other out in the small communities. If you know your neighbour is going away, keep an eye out and report anything you find unusual to local police.
"Even if it's only a registration plate, small details can lead to bigger things."
Investigators are yet to determine if the two burglaries are linked.
