Teen critical after crash
A 14-year-old is in critical condition at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne after an incident crash at the Horsham Motorcycling Club on Saturday, May 30.
The incident occurred at 10am during the practice rounds for round three of the Peter Stevens Junior Victorian Motocross Championships, when the young rider accidentally made contact with a fellow competitor after completing a jump.
Event medical staff and paramedics treated the young rider at the scene before he was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
“Ambulance Victoria responded to reports of an incident in Dooen around 10am on May 30,” an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.
“A specialist Air Ambulance Victoria helicopter crew, Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic crews assessed and treated one patient at the scene.
“A teenage boy with an upper body injury was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.”
Motorcycling Victoria Motocross committee member Kenny Watts, who also serves as secretary of the Horsham Motorcycling Club, credited the medical and ambulance staff.
“We gave him the best medical assistance at the track before paramedics came,” Mr Watts said on June 1.
“We had two nurses, a paramedic and a paramedic trainer on hand, and they did a great job before more ambulance staff arrived.
“He’s being looked after at the Royal Children’s now, and we’re hopeful he can make a full recovery."
Mr Watts said this was a rare and unfortunate event.
“It’s an unfortunate incident,” he said.
“The young rider has ridden the track a lot, and it’s an unlucky situation where he’s collided with the other rider.
“The other rider was fortunately unscathed and was able to continue riding immediately.”
Mr Watts confirmed that all events follow strict safety protocols and said police watched the jump closely when the competition resumed.
“Accidents can happen, and there’s nothing we can do about it,” he said.
“The police remained there and videoed the actual jump being used by other competitors, and there was nothing untoward or irregular about it.
“We had over 300 riders race the track on the weekend, who would have been going over that jump multiple times.”
