The future development of Horsham aerodrome as a region flight hub rests partly on a survey now being conducted by Horsham Rural City Council.
Council has started work on a Regional City Flight Hub Master Plan, which will guide development of the Horsham Aerodrome for the next 20 to 50 years, and it needs input from the community.
The aerodrome is currently used by general aviation and the local aero club, two gliding clubs, crop dusting firms, charter aircraft and air ambulances, as well as as a DELWP air base to support fire-fighting and occasionally by military aircraft.
Completing a masterplan is the first step council must take to attract external funding to enable the aerodrome to expand its capabilities as a regional flight hub.
To better understand the future potential use of the aerodrome, council says it needs to know if the community might be interested in using commercial flights in the future if this becomes a viable travel opportunity.
With this in mind, it has engaged Stafford Strategy to undertake a feasibility study and complete a business case to help determine options for the future development of the aerodrome.
Residents' responses will go directly to Stafford Strategy and will be kept confidential, but will help the firm in assessing the level of future demand for air travel into and out of Horsham.
A separate survey is being sent to the business community in Horsham.
The survey findings will be shared with council and the community to help illustrate the level of demand for potential flights.
