Subtly sending Christmas wish list screenshots to the family groupchat
A Mum's World: illegally early items added to the wish list.
One of my daughters actually put screenshots of the top three items on her Christmas wish list on our family group chat a full week ago!
Not only am I pretty sure that's illegally early, but it's also extremely aspirational; item three is a French perfume with a starting price of $266.
I just rolled my eyes and scrolled past.
With my three daughters now aged 18, 20 and 22, they really do need to choose their own gifts to a certain extent though, to ensure I don't throw away hard-earned money on things they won't use.
With this fragrance-loving daughter moving into a sharehouse in 2025, I am absolutely certain she needs a microwave, cutlery and a set of kitchen scales way more than Yves Saint Laurent.
While this reality will hit her at some point, it may only be after she has spent her last dollar on a signature make-up brush set.
So, do I gift her cash and hope she'll spend it wisely, or gift her the boring but absolutely necessary essentials because I know she definitely won't spend her money wisely?
I'll end up getting her the essentials anyway, right?
We're all painfully aware of the correct answer here.
I'll need to gift her the essentials, and something luxuriously lovely, plus some cash to arrange for the other things she thinks she needs that she must select herself.
Hopefully, I'll find something small enough to fit in a Christmas stocking because the girls still want me to lay them out on Christmas Eveand I think I willbut the 25-drawer Christmas Advent Calendar I decorated way more than a decade ago is most definitely a bridge too far!
I used to fill each of the 25 drawers with three small gifts - often chocolates - but even my fundamental math skills inform me that 75 gifts are required, so I'm out.
The girls used to gather around each morning and perform a little song and dance before taking turns to open a drawer and distribute the treats.
I promise I'm not a scrouge, it's just that I'm feeling tired but I'm absolutely sure that Carols by Candlelight at Sawyer Park next Sunday evening will ignite the spirit of Christmas!
