Murtoa's Big Weekend is once again shaping up to be exciting for visitors of all ages as organisers introduce several new elements to the three-day event, expected to inject thousands of dollars into the Wimmera.
A stunning line-up will offer the community and visitors to Murtoa an opportunity to come together and enjoy a large variety of features to suit every age, commencing with the Donald Mineral Sands Lake Cinema and Music Experience on the shore of Lake Marma on Friday October 6.
Murtoa Big Weekend committee member and Yarriambiack Shire Councillor Tom Hamilton said the Friday evening was shaping up to be "brilliant".
"A lot of hard work has gone into the big weekend and the Friday night, in particular, will be impressive as the lake is lit up," Cr Hamilton said.
"It will be a great family night out."
Cr Hamilton said he hoped the weekend would bring lots of people to the town, adding that the Big Weekend was good recognition for the town not only now but also into the future.
"We understand that money is tight right now so most of the events are free," he said.
Cr Hamilton said some of the highlights would include the train and shuttles running to the town, which passengers would be able to access from anywhere and which suited many budgets and preferred options.
"For the first time we're having former staff, including Bob Petschel, speaking at The Stick Shed, which is sure to be interesting for visitors," he said.
"And even if you're not an engine lover, the Dunmunkle Sumpoilers Hornsby engines are a sight to behold.
"The sumpoilers are only open to the public for the big weekend and experiencing the huge engines tick over slowly and quietly is a definitely special.
"I highly recommend everyone goes and visits the sumpoilers while they're in town."
Friday October 6
10am-4pm, Murtoa Show: The 137th Murtoa show will be a gathering of community and visitors and, like all regional shows, fills an important role in every small town as a place to be seen and in which to participate. 6-11pm: Lake Cinema and Music Experience, Lake Marma: Grab a chair or a picnic blanket and head to the shore of the lake to enjoy live music followed by a movie on the big screen.
8pm-12am: Sound and Light Show, Lake Marma precinct: An illuminating, unique experience that shows the town "in a different light".
Saturday October 7
9am-1pm, Lake Market: Browse the large range of market stalls and take in the children's entertainment while enjoying the lush surrounds of Lake Marma.
9am - 1pm: Show 'n' Shine: Marvel at the fantastic display of cars from various categories.
11am-5pm, Ecycle Solutions Murtoa Cup, Murtoa Racecourse: Offering everything that country racing is renowned for, the cup opens the Spring Racing Carnival and gives patrons a relaxed day out country.racing.com/murtoa
7.30pm, Speakeasy Cabaret, Murtoa Mechanics Hall: Dress up as a mobster or moll and enjoy a night of old-fashioned cabaret fun. Book at http://trybooking.com/CKOUX $50
Sunday October 8
9.30am, Colour Run, Lake Marma Circuit: Walk or jog along the shore of the lake and get colour-bombed by Murtoa College students.
All weekend
Friday noon-2pm, Saturday 9.30am-4pm, Sunday 10am-4pm: Murtoa Museum precinct: Explore Murtoa's history throughout the weekend. For just $9 visitors can explore the town's historical buildings. Learn more at www.murtoamuseum.com.au/
