Students step into the workforce
Year 10 Students from the Wimmera Lutheran College have stepped out of the classroom and into the workforce this week as part of the school’s annual work experience program.
Year 10 Students from the Wimmera Lutheran College have stepped out of the classroom and into the workforce this week as part of the school’s annual work experience program.The eager students ventured out to gain a hands-on taste of professional life across a range of local industries ranging from automotive, agriculture and healthcare with many different paths reaching as far as Melbourne.
Noah Gualke, who strives to specialize in automotive, was placed at Wilson and Bolton where he learned the tools of the trade under the hood.
“At an early age I’ve always been fond of cars and becoming some sort of mechanic,” he said.
With the help of his supervisor, Owen Kalms, Noah learned to navigate a car’s anatomy and take a look into the daily life of an automotive expert.
“I work on my VS commodore a lot at home so I reckon with my newly learnt skills I can use them to upgrade my car.”
He was involved in several activities such as working on cars and learning to read diagrams, which expanded his knowledge of the automotive industry.
Noah, who is currently working part time at Horsham Auto Electrical, hopes to continue his career path in 2026 with a school-based apprenticeship.
With his now new found expertise, Noah can successfully say that he has taken a lot out of his experience at Wilson and Bolton.
Annabelle Mackenzie-Packham volunteered at the Horsham Special school where she enjoyed the experience of being an Education Support person, and learning the importance of special needs children’s education, and the daily routines, experiences and challenges of a teacher.
“This is just an awesome atmosphere and it’s so calm,” she said.
“It makes me feel at home.”
Annabelle’s experience with special needs children was inspired by her younger brothers.
She aims to study teaching after school and get a placement in Education Support at the Horsham Special school.
“I would definitely come back to the Horsham Special School,” she said.
“I love working with the teachers who help me learn the ways of interacting with these kids.
“They’re so sweet and supportive.”
Horsham’s Emmanuel Amilegbe volunteered with the GraceLand clinic in Dimboola.
He hopes to one day become a surgeon and study medicine after school, working towards a surgeon position based in Victoria.
The 16-year-old enjoyed various activities such as taking over reception and learning what it is like to be a nurse as well as observing how surgical practices are performed and structured.
“This week is an educational experience,” he said.
“I was surprised that I was able to observe how surgical procedures are performed.
“It was an eye opening experience to understand the day-to-day life of a GP.”
Working alongside his parents, Emmanuel admitted he developed a better appreciation of their jobs.
“My biggest inspiration would be my hardworking parents,” he said.
“I hope to one day work with my dad because my dad always wanted to work with one of his sons.”
Georgie Schilling was placed at the Horsham Your Family Vet where she interacted in many different activities such as observing surgeries, cleaning cages, and taking care of the animals.
“Since I was young I always wanted to be a vet because I grew up around a lot of dogs,” she said.
Despite the challenges she faced, Georgie‘s eye-opening experience with Your Family Vet has inspired her to pursue a pathway towards a vet career in the near future.
The week offered many students a valuable glimpse into their future careers, helping them build confidence about their aspirations.
