St Marys fall short against Birchip

Isaac McPherson again starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 41 to guide Brim-KSH home against Marnoo at the Marnoo Recreation Reserve on Sunday in Round Four of the Wimmera-Mallee Cricket Association.
After losing the toss and bowling, Brim-KSH bowled Marnoo out for 104 off 31 overs. Brenden Marrs top scored for Marnoo with 41 runs whilst Charlie Dean finished with figures of 4/7 for Brim-KSH. Isaac McPherson also took 3/11.
In the chase, Brenden Marrs got Matthew Crisp, Connor McGinniss and Lachlan McGinniss out cheaply to have Brim-KSH 3/26.
Chris McPherson fell for 14 and then when Leigh Dovaston was trapped leg before for 2, the score was 5/50 and Marnoo smelt an upset. Royce Bennett was Benjamin Newton's second scalp, clean bowled for 13 with the score suddenly 6/72.
Isaac McPherson steered the innings home in the 32nd over. Brenden Marrs was the best bowler for Marnoo with figures of 3/16.
Opening Batsman Matthew Crisp praised Isaac McPherson for his brilliant start to the year.
"He is playing incredibly well at the moment. He is scoring runs and taking wickets. If it wasn't for Issac, it would be a massive concern," Crisp said.
At Anzac Park, St Marys lost by 34 runs to Birchip. After losing the toss and being sent in to bowl, they restricted Birchip to 9/167. Nicholas Germano, 5/38, had a brilliant day with the ball for St Marys.
With needing their biggest score of the year, St Marys run chase started off horribly with Nicholas Germano bowled first ball by Jonty Randall. Three overs later, Kael Zanker was trapped LBW off the bowling of Ty Colbert for a duck and the home side were 2/4.
The fifth over was disastrous for St Marys with Jonty Randall dismissing Nick Toscano and Bailey Watts to have St Marys 4/6. Colby Schmidt came to the crease and could only manage 4 runs in the next four overs before he was dismissed and at 5/21, St Marys needed a miracle.
Paul Rowe and Shannon Bartlett gave them hope with a brilliant 61 run partnership until Barlett fell for 25.
With Paul Rowe set at the crease and hitting plenty of shots, St Marys were still in the game. Brodie Dennes, 12, and Lincoln Westerland, 4, fought hard with Rowe, but they couldn't get the job done with Randall dismissing Rowe to give him a 5-fer, with final figures of 5/8.
St Marys captain Colby Schmidt rued the loss of early wickets again but praised Rowe for his performance, saying it was the best he has seen in the three years he has been at the club.
"Paul batted brilliantly. He went out there and played shots and scored runs," he said.
"We seem to lose a couple of wickets and then lost another in quick succession. It's happening way too much.
"People are down on confidence but we are getting better as each week goes and are able to score more runs so we know it will all click soon."
In the other match Donald Jeffcott had an easy 149 run win over St Arnaud at King Georges Park. After winning the toss and batting, they made 6/246 with Noah Berry the topscorer with 59. Trent Grant had an excellent cameo bringing up his 50 off 31 balls, hitting five sixes. Adam Prichard had best figures of 2/32 (6).
Bruce Hando top scored with 32 in the chase as they were bowled out for just 97. Cooper Anderson, 4/16 did the damage with the ball for Donald Jeffcott.
St Marys B Grade lost by 91 runs to Birchip with Matt Hartnett, 37, and Aiden Keys, 38, the standouts with the bat.
Charlton annihilated Brim-KSH by the tune of 210 runs. They scored 273 with Billy Sexton hitting 132 off 99 balls. Trent Allen led the way for Brim-KSH in the chase, with a top score of 16*, finishing with 9/63 after their 40 overs.
In the other match, Connor Boyle's impressive figures of 7/14 led Watchem to an 89 run win over Southern Mallee Giants.
