St Brigid’s deputy recognised for inclusive culture
Deputy Principal Fiona Combe’s commitment to the St Brigid’s school community was recognised through her nomination for the Bishop Paul Bird CSsR Spirit of Catholic Education Awards by the Diocese of Ballarat Catholic Education Limited during Catholic Education Week.
Mrs Combe was nominated in the engagement and belonging category, values she exemplifies in her role.
She was “surprised” at her nomination, noting, “it’s not all me; there’s a team of people that contribute to the work that’s happening here”.
“I’m really proud that our team is having such a big impact, and we’re proud of the work we’re doing,” she said.
Principal Gerard Raven nominated Mrs Combe for fostering a school culture where students, staff, and families feel included.
“People feel like they belong when they feel seen, and that's the same for staff and students,” she said.
Deputy principal and teacher, Mrs Combe is also the Student Agency Facilitator and coordinates the ‘Schools That Listen’ student agency project at St Brigid’s.
The project focuses on helping Year 9 students feel engaged at a critical point in their education.
“It’s been terrific to see the change in their attitudes and their ideas coming forward,” she said on the program’s success.
"We’re looking to spend more time out in the community, engaging in service so students can identify real needs and follow their interests through meaningful passion projects.”
St Brigid’s staff model the motto ‘we are a team that acts with strength and gentleness,’ highlighting the importance of strong leadership and teamwork.
“As a deputy principal, I think my job is to make sure that everyone else has what they need to do their job, and to help them when they need support,” she said.
Mrs Combe finds motivation in her role in developing and maintaining relationships with students, staff, and parents, and “making small changes to help students grow”.
