Speed reduction near Rainbow Lake
THE Hindmarsh Shire Council will ask the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) to review the speed limit on Dimboola-Rainbow Road near Rainbow Lake, after councillors supported a proposal at the April council meeting.
The council voted to authorise officers to submit a speed reduction application seeking to extend the existing 80km/h speed zone about 700 metres further south, past the Rainbow Lake entrance.
The road currently has a 100km/h speed limit in the area near the lake precinct.
Council officers said reducing the speed to 80km/h would improve safety for families, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles turning into and out of the lake area.
Rainbow Lake is a key recreational and community asset on the southern approach to Rainbow.
The precinct is a family-friendly destination, but the council said community use had been affected by concerns about high-speed traffic near the entrance.
The report noted the road carried local traffic, tourist vehicles and heavy vehicles, creating both perceived and actual safety risks.
The request followed advocacy by a Rainbow resident, with support from the Rainbow Lake Committee and the Rainbow Township Advisory Committee.
The council said the speed limit change could not be made by council alone, as the Department of Transport and Planning is responsible for approving speed changes on arterial and declared roads.
There are no financial implications for submitting the application.
If approved, the department would fund the signage costs.
