Show spirits soar through cloudy skies

Wind, overcast skies, scattered rain and muggy conditions: Saturday's Dimboola Show certainly had it all.
However, this did little to deter the 200-strong crowd from participating in all that the annual show had to offer.
Taking in the horse competitions and the show 'n' shine, show-goers were warmly welcomed and entertained right from the start of the day.
From the poultry, produce, steampunk and art competitions, to the sideshows, rides, animal nursery and children's activities, the smiles on the visitors' faces were evidence of how much fun they were having.
Visiting Dimboola from Corinella, near Phillip Island, Peter and Alison Blyde said they were impressed by what they saw at the show and were eager to support the local community, as were the visitors of all ages who converged from across the Wimmera, including Jeparit and Horsham.
Nhill-Dimboola Band provided music on the day, playing several numbers that had the crowd's toes tapping before marking the official opening with the national anthem.
Show president Harvey McKinnon welcomed everyone, commenting that it was great to see youth and enthusiasm shining through on the day.
Officially opening the show, Wimmera Southern Mallee Development project manager Georgina Bennett paid tribute to the many hours of hard work the volunteers and community had put into the show.
"The Wimmera truly is an outstanding place," Ms Bennett said.
"And the show is a testament to the spirit of the community."
Delighting the crowd, the showgirl entrants looked lovely and the showboys dapper as they smiled and spun on the stage.
Tessa Smith was named the 0-2 years showgirl, while Peyton Ross, Molly Avery, Milla Eldridge and Sophie Cook claimed the sashes in the 3-5, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-16 years girls' age groups.
Although it drew a slightly smaller field of entrants, the showboy competion was no less entertaining as Xander Mibus was named 0-2 years boys' winner.
And, in a coup for the Mibus family, his brothers Hunter and Xavier went on to win the 3-5 and 6-8 boys' age groups, respectively.
Wrapping up the day, a shearing demonstration left onlookers impressed.
