Shire goes its own way on holiday
All of Victoria marked the eve of the AFL Grand Final in traditional fashion - with a public holiday - but it won't be quite the same on the day that stops the nation.

Hindmarsh Shire Council has been granted approval to observe alternative public holidays in Nhill and Rainbow lieu of Melbourne Cup Day.
The Victorian Government has declared a full-day public holiday in each town.
In Rainbow, Kenmare and Albacutya the public holiday will be celebrated for Rainbow Show on Tuesday October 15 this year.
In Nhill, Little Desert, Gerang Gerung, Kiata, Glenlee, Netherby, Lorquon, Yanac and Broughton it will fall on Thursday October 17 2024.
The remaining areas within Hindmarsh Shire will have a full-day public holiday on Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday November 5.
The decision will allow Hindmarsh residents in those areas to fully enjoy the experience of their local shows and appreciate the planning and preparation of the respective A&P societies in each town.
The Dimboola Show will be held on Saturday October 19 and the Jeparit Show on Sunday October 20.
