Saints defeat Lions for one-day premiership
The Horsham Saints claimed the Horsham Cricket Association B grade one-day premiership on Sunday, defeating Swifts-Great Western in a hard-fought final at City Oval.
Leading the way for the Saints was an unbeaten knock from youngster Archie Sostheim.
The Combine elected to bat, where openers Craig Marrow (22) and Matthew Delzotto (28) got the side off to a fast start before Mark Crafter dismissed Marrow.
Consistent wickets restricted Swift-Great Western’s runs as the Saints eventually dismissed the side for 144 in the 38th over.
The wickets were shared among the Saints bowlers, with Mark Crafter (2/10), Zachary Hamerston (2/13), Pradesh Venu Kudililparambil (2/14) and Brock Hamerston (2/25) all taking two wickets.
The Saints were in immediate trouble in their innings after Matthew Dean trapped Mark Crafter in front in the first over.
Skipper Alan Dube played a patient innings to support Archie Sostheim, who helped get the Saints back on track.
A crucial 21 not out, including the winning six, from Muhammad Hassaan Masood saw the Saints reach 6/146 in the 37th over to win the premiership.
Archie Sostheim’s unbeaten knock of 61 saw him awarded man of the match.
Marc Brilliant led SGW with 2/23, while opening bowlers Matthew Dean (1/25) and Stewart MacPherson (1/25) provided economical overs.
Ecstatic with the victory, Archie Sostheim was proud to help the side to the premiership.
“You work all year for this, so it’s really good to get over the line in the end,” Sostheim said.
Asked about his approach towards the end of the innings, Sostheim said he tried to play smart, simple cricket.
“I just thought to rotate the strike, keep it simple,” Sostheim said.
“There was no need to take any risky shots; we didn't need heaps of runs,
“Just needed to tick over the strike, and that's all you really need to do, and we got there in the end.”
