Yarriambiack Shire Council has announced some exciting news for Rupanyup's keen readers, saying that the town's new library will be complete by the end of the year.
Mayor Kylie Zanker said council aims to have the constructor secured by May and be open in time for Christmas.
“We have so many great projects that enhance and grow community engagement that I just love and the Rupanyup community library precinct is definitely one of them,” she said.
"The final documents were completed in late February, and tenders are set to be released in mid-March."
Cr Zanker said that she and council believe libraries are vital to communities, and that their enhancement of library services, including the popular Words on Wheels and upcoming Digital Literacy for Seniors sessions, is something council strongly supports.
“We’re delighted to work with the community, in any way, to build our towns up up and have a great asset there for everyone to share,” she said.
“We want more people, more often, coming together and engaging in our services and spaces.”
The new library will provide the same services under the Yarriambiack Libraries banner, such as computer and internet access, online and physical book borrowing, and provide a meeting space for local groups to convene.
“The library is about more than the (reading) services, it’s about that space being there for people to use as well,” Cr Zanker said.
“It could be a playgroup that might choose to meet there, or it could be some seniors that get together for a cuppa and some iPad training. It's about how we can best utilise these spaces.”
Cr Zanker said she hopes the library service will provide more opportunities for Rupanyup residents to connect, just as the libraries have for other Yarriambiack towns.
“Libraries are aways an open and inviting space," she said.
"Often it’s that connection that libraries bring, and I think the Rupanyup community library precinct will be a space which can be used in so many ways,” she said.
