Our closest round for the year, right before we take a two week break for the school holidays, saw all sides with a chance for a victory coming into the last round of doubles matches.
Game 1: Lentils v Barley.
Both sides entered this contest having lost only one game each for the season so far, both to Team Peas. Neither side was as selected, and with substitute players called in to help out, the match ups would be interesting.
Ash Purdue from Team Barley put his side on the board with an easy victory over Lentils’ Owen Osborne, while substitute Lentils player Charlie Martin evened the score with a win over Barley’s Shane Wardle.
Barley players Wendy Lehmann and substitute Zeke Clark were too good for their Lentil opponents Keedie Wardle and substitute player Will Martin in the remaining singles played.
Zeke, who is still playing with our juniors, and Will, who is back home for a week or two, provided the highlight of the first round of singles between these two sides with a five-game match.
Will took the opening game 11-4, with Zeke striking back and winning the next two games. Will claimed the fourth and we were into a five game decider.
Congratulations to Zeke who came through in the final game, eventually winning 7-11, 11-6, 13-11, 4-11, 11-3.
The first round of doubles were both won by Lentils, and at the halfway mark, both sides were level on sets and games, with Barley narrowly ahead on points.
Games went as expected with the reverse single, and the sides were still locked together with the final round of doubles to be played.
The evenness of the two sides continued on with the last two contested doubles games, both sides winning a set each 3-0.
A calculator was needed to separate the two sides, with Barley running out winners by 10 points.
Final result: Barley 6 sets, 22 games, 401 points to Lentils 6 sets, 22 games 391 points.
Game 2: Peas v Wheat.
Team Peas appeared at this stage to be the side to beat, and it was Team Wheats turn to see if they could knock them off their perch.
Lindsay Martin, subbing for Peas player Jason Robinson who is still on the tractor, took on Wheat’s Sandon Schultz.
They proceeded to play what was to become the first of five five-game matches between the sides for the evening.
Sandon claimed the first two games, but Lindsay chalked one up for the older players and was able to come back from two games down to win the final three games, putting his adopted side ahead, 10-12, 9-11, 16-14, 13-11, 11-5.
This was a fantastic game to watch, with only the last game played having a final scoreline greater than two points, and this match set the tone for these two sides for the remainder of the night.
Wheat claimed the next two matches, but Peas’ Mel Patni finally overcame Wheat’s Craig Byron in the next of the five setters, leaving scores tied at the end of the first round of singles, two sets all.
Both sides won a match each in the first round of doubles, and then we were into the second round of singles.
This round of singles produced two unexpected results when the lower-ranked players beat their higher-ranked opponent.
John Woods, playing as a sub for the night on the Wheat team, was too good for Lindsay Martin, winning 11-9, 13-15, 11-8, 11-8.
Over on the other table, Mel Patni played another five-game match, this time against Wheat’s David Ward, winning this match, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-3.
By the time these two sides finished their last two rounds of doubles matches, most of the players from the other competing teams were home and tucked up in bed, or watching the cricket.
The final two matches saw another two five-set games, with Team Peas breaking the deadlock and winning both.
The Peas side won all of the five-set matches played. In fact, over the last two weeks, they have been involved in nine five-game matches, winning eight of them.
Team Wheat gave them a fright and almost got the chocolates.
Final result: Peas 7 sets, 23 games, 466 points to Wheat 5 sets, 26 games 461 points.
Game 3: Beans v Vetch.
The final game of the round and this matchup was just as close and as enthralling as the other games played earlier.
Team Vetch No.1 Brendon Bibby had a good night, winning his opening match in five against Beans No.1 Glenn Miller, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8, only to see his side lose the next three singles matches and trail 3-1 after the first round of singles.
Both sides each won a doubles match before the main break, with the contest between the sides No’s 1 and 2 players going to five games.
This particular match was as close as they could get - Team Vetch’s Brendon Bibby and Rob Lehmann triumphing over the Beans’ combination of Glenn Miller and Graeme Koschitzke, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-9.
At the interval, the Beans team were in high spirits as they were up four sets to two and in with a chance to record their first win for the year.
The second round of singles saw the reverse of the first round. This time, Team Vetch won three of the four played.
Vetch’s Rob Lehmann went against the flow and was able to beat Glenn Miller in three, 11-8, 11-9, 13-11.
This victory allowed the Vetch team to tie the match up at five sets all, with only the final doubles matches to be played.
Vetch No’s 1 and 3, Brendon Bibby and Fiona Holland won the first of the reverse doubles, winning in five against Beans’ Glenn Miller and Heather Huebner.
For Beans to claim their first scalp, the pairing of Graeme Koschitzke and Josh Hutchinson would have to overcome Vetch’s Rob Lehmann and Amy Holland.
Both sides had the combination of an experienced player and someone just starting out, the young and the old (with apologies to the referenced “old”).
Graeme and Josh were able to help their side, winning over Rob and Amy, 11-5, 11-9,11-8, and in doing so, ensured their side’s first win for the year.
Brendon Bibby continued on his good form, winning all four of his games for the night, whilst for the victorious Beans team, the young and old combination of Heather Huebner and Josh Hutchinson each won three of the games they were involved in.
While winning is not everything, it sure beats coming second. Congratulations to Team Beans, you’re on the board.
Final result: Beans 6 sets, 24 games, 409 points to Vetch 6 sets, 20 games, 396 points.
