Roos set for intense finals battles

Dimboola are set to kick off their second consecutive finals campaign in the Wimmera Football Netball League against reigning Premiers Minyip Murtoa on Sunday at Alexandra Oval in Stawell.
The Roos are heading into the finals on a five game losing streak – all of which have come against finals teams except for Stawell.
They have had a lot of injuries over the last month of the year. Dimboola Club President Justin Ward spoke about how they have managed the playing list.
“We were hit with injuries the last month but the wins we had early in the year helped us get a good hold on the ladder and enabled us to manage the list better,” Ward said.
“It gave us a chance to rest a few players for longer and not rush them back, therefore we could get them right ahead of finals and going into this Saturday we should be at full strength for the first time in a long time.”
When Dimboola were near full strength earlier in the year they beat the Southern Mallee Giants and Minyip Murtoa and lost to flag favourites Ararat by five points, so with that in mind and what they can do on their day, Ward is confident they can go far in the finals.
“We would have played finals in 2021 but as everyone is aware, the season was cut short due to Covid. We played finals last year and you don’t win a flag off one year of finals.”
“The experience last year should hold us in good stead and on our day we know we can beat the good teams so we are hopeful as a club that we can make a good mark this finals campaign,” Ward explained.
In other great news for the club, Jack Landt has signed on to coach the club for another season.
There is other positive news for the club ahead of the finals. Despite only having one football team in the finals, the Roos have a great representation in Netball. All teams except the B Grade and Under 15’s are in the finals and according to Ward, the buzz around the club is high.
“It’s really good to have a big representation in netball. The entire club is buzzing and confident that we can make a mark on the finals,” Ward said.
“We are quite lucky with what is coming through at the moment from the juniors. We have two or three juniors playing A Grade as well which is great. We are really flourishing in that area and it’s a good sign not only for this finals campaign, but also the future,” Ward concluded.
