DIMBOOLA netballers claimed two wins from four matches during the first round of Wimmera netball finals over the weekend.
A Grade and 17 & Under netballers claimed victories to advance to the second week of finals, while the C Grade and 13 & Under Roos were defeated and eliminated from the race.
The first week of finals saw some exciting netball as the Roos A Grade team produced a strong performance to down Nhill and set up a semi-final clash this weekend.
The Roos controlled the contest at Murtoa after quarter time, extending a lead in each of the last three quarters to run out eventual winners 53-41, finishing with 13 goals in the final term.
A 14-8 goal second quarter provided the momentum required for victory as the Roos maintained its advantage through some accurate shooting from Olivia Jorgensen under the ring.
Jorgensen topped a best on court display with 42 goals as she teamed well with midcourt team-mates and Holly Ross who was strong in defence and reduced her Nhill opponents’ influence on the match.
Dimboola will now play Stawell in this weekend’s first semi-final at Beulah.
Dimboola’s 17 & Under team prevailed in a lead changing game to claim an eventual six-goal victory when they claimed a 44-38 goal win over Ararat in Sunday’s elimination final at Ararat.
Ararat led by two goals at quarter time before the Roos turned the tables in the second term to grab their own two-goal lead at half time, 21-19.
A frantic third quarter saw the lead change several times as the Rats took a narrow one goal lead into three quarter time when they scored 12 goals to nine and lead 31-30 at the last break.
But the Roos produced a dominant final quarter with some strong play through the midcourt and were miserly in defence which reduced the Rats to seven goals for the quarter.
Dimboola scored 14 goals for the last quarter as shooters Tarah Bond and Lilly Schorback finished off play from team-mates to finish with 24 and 19 goals respectively.
Alyssa Petschel was strong in defence and reaped the rewards of her efforts in the final term to be a strong contributor.
Dimboola will meet Warrack Eagles at Beulah this Sunday in the first semi-final.
In the C Grade elimination final, the Roos were unable to break the advantage of the home team Rats when they were defeated 27-19.
Ararat controlled the contest from the opening whistle and led throughout the match despite a strong third term when the teams went goal-for-goal with eight apiece before the Rats finished strongly with six goals to three in the final term.
Tasharna Petschel finished the match with 12 goals.
The youngest Roos produced a strong performance before going down to Stawell by six goals, 43-37.
Stawell set up a narrow two-goal lead in the first quarter before extending their lead to five goals at half time when they controlled play and led 21-16.
But the Roos hit back hard in the third term when they scored 12 goals to eight and trailed by just one goal at three quarter time through some strong play through the midcourt and in defence.
Looking to maintain its momentun, the Roos were met by a resilient Warriors team who took back control of the contest in the final term to run out eventual six goal winners.
In defence, the Roos were well served by Bella Mibus and Ava Henderson who teamed well to help set up team-mates through the midcourt and shooters Lily Baker and Tilly Barry who shot 25 and 12 goals respectively.
