A new clinic opened on November 24 is designed to improve access to specialised care for women who have abnormal periods.

Part of Grampians Health's Women’s Health Clinic project, it provides timely, evidence-
based care to create better medical outcomes and reduce unnecessary interventions.

Patients across the Grampians region now have access to a range of treatment options – including
both hormonal and non-hormonal therapies – with a focus on uterine-preserving treatments.

“By providing specialised care locally we hope to make a positive impact on
the lives of women in our community,” Grampians Health chief operating officer Ben Kelly said.

Heavy menstrual bleeding affects about one in four women of reproductive age, significantly
impacting quality of life, according to the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health
Care.

“Excessive menstrual bleeding or abnormal periods can severely impact women’s day-to-day lives and their physical and emotional well-being," Dr Natasha Frawley, clinical director for women and children at Grampians Health, said.

"Through the clinic we hope to ensure that care is easily accessible and suggest appropriate treatment pathways to alleviate these conditions.”

Located in Ballarat, the weekly clinic is staffed by a gynaecology registrar and specialist nurses.

Appointments are currently available via GP referral.
