Premiers overcome Cougars

Fresh off a third straight premiership, Harrow Balmoral’s senior football side opened its 2026 season with a gritty win over Kaniva Leeor United on Saturday April 11.

Playing at Kaniva, the Southern Roos kicked 11.15 (81) to the Cougars’ 6.8 (44) in their round-one clash. 

In his Horsham District debut, Lachy Bates got the home side an early lead with the first goal five minutes into the game.

But Harrow Balmoral immediately struck back with a goal from Jai Thompson, with the visitors kicking two additional goals to lead 22-7. 

Both sides created opportunities in the second quarter as the Southern Roos slightly extended their lead to 42-23 at half-time. 

Jordan Clark got an early third-quarter goal for the Cougars but Harrow Balmoral were able to consistently put pressure on the home side to close out the quarter 55-30.

Four final-term goals helped to secure the game for the reigning premiers, who finished with a 37-point victory. 

Coach Jai Thompson led the Southern Roos with four goals and Mitchell Grant and recruit Liam Hickman each kicked two goals. 

As well as Thompson, Will Burbury, Michael Close, Matt Jones and Peter Staude were among the best for the victors. 

For Kaniva Leeor, Jordan Clark led the side with two goals while Lochlyn Hahne, Patrick Munn, Jock and Charlie Maddern, and youngster Willis Stimson were among the team’s best.
