Pomonal, Moyston residents told to leave as Grampians bushfire moves south

The bushfire is travelling south towards Redman Road

An Emergency Warning has been issued for Moyston and Pomonal residents to leave immediately.

Black Range, Jallukar, Londonderry, Mafeking, Rhymney and Willaura North residents have been told they should leave now before conditions worsen.

People in Bornes Hill, Dunkeld, Glenthompson, Jimmy Creek, Karabeal, Mirranatwa, Strathmore, Victoria Valley and Victoria Point were told to remain vigilant as conditions change.

The Grampians National Park bushfire is travelling in a southerly direction towards Redman Road and Long Gully Road.

Private property adjoining the National Park could be impacted in the next two hours, south of the February 13 fire area.

VicEmergency said: "Leaving immediately is the safest option before conditions become too dangerous."

A smoke column has developed around the Mt William area and embers have started small fires ahead of the main fire.

What you should do:

Travel to:

  • The home of family or friends that is away from the warning area.

  • You should leave using Ararat Halls Gap Road and head towards Ararat or Stawell.

  • When you leave remember to take your pets, medications, mobile phone and charger.

Stawell - Grampians Community Health (known as "The Shacc")22 Patrick Street Stawell is unstaffed until 6.00am Thursday 26 December.

Anyone can register with Red Cross via the Register.Find.Reunite so your family and friends can find you.

What you should do:

  • Monitor changes to the situation. Increased wind speed, change in wind direction, smoke or poor visibility can indicate the situation is changing.

  • You will see an increase in aerial fire suppression activity throughout today

  • Enact your fire survival plan now. If your plan is to leave, leave early.

  • If you have time, check your neighbours to see if they are monitoring conditions.

  • Protect yourself and your family.

Leave if the situation changes or you feel unsafe.

Remember to:

  • When you leave take your medications, mobile phone charger and other necessary items you will need.

  • Take your pets. Ensure you have a lead, food and water for them.

  • Many people have tried to leave at the last minute during fires.

  • Travel to the home of family and friends in a safer location south west of the Grampians region.

Impacts in your area:

  • Bushfires can spread quickly and are extremely dangerous.

  • Trees can be extremely dangerous during a bushfire or high winds. Do not stand, park or travel in areas of fire affected trees.

  • Bushfires can start spot fires and embers can travel large distances ahead of the main fire.
