Police detectives and a helicopter search unit swooped into Dimboola yesterday after a man's body was found at a house in Victoria Street.
Plain clothes and uniform officers questioned locals as the house was cordoned off.
A VicPol helicopter was spotted landing in the Recreation Reserve yesterday morning.
According to police, the body was discovered late on Monday afternoon.
"This sort of thing just doesn't happen here," a local business owner told the Dimboola Banner yesterday.
"It is a little bit scary."
A police spokesperson said a crime scene had been set up at the address, while police worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
“Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in Dimboola," the spokesperson said.
"Officers attended a property on Victoria Street just after 5pm on Monday, after a man was located deceased."
It is understood detectives also questioned the driver of the VLine bus, prompting speculation they were searching for someone, or trying to establish the movements of an individual.
"I saw them talking to the driver of the VLine bus," a local business owner said.
"I think they were asking for his logbooks, so maybe they were looking for someone."
One resident said it was "highly unusual" to see a number of police cars in Victoria Street.
"They were here all night - lots of police cars, well into the early hours, with lots of lights shining," he said.
"They asked me some questions this morning, if I heard or saw anything strange going on (at the property).
"I heard they flew a coroner in from Melbourne, which is really unusual, so whatever it was must have been really bad."
Some locals said they thought the body had been discovered in the boot of a car on the property.
"I believe someone found the dead body in the boot of the car and called the cops," one neighbour said.
Some people said they believed the homicide might be related to a disturbance in town.
"I saw (someone) a few days ago in the town throwing stuff on the windows of the businesses," one person said.
