Pimpinio earn gritty win over Kalkee
Pimpinio recorded their sixth straight win as they defeated Kalkee in a hard-fought round-15 clash on Saturday in the Horsham District Football Netball League.
Pimpinio recorded their sixth straight win as they defeated Kalkee in a hard-fought round-15 clash on Saturday in the Horsham District Football Netball League.
The final score saw Pimpinio kick 7.6 (48) to Kalkee’s 5.6 (36).
In wet and muddy conditions, Kalkee made the most of their up-forward opportunities early on through goals to Ben Lawson and Karl Campbell, before a goal to Pimpinio’s Matthew Rosier late in the first quarter made it 14-9 at the first break.
After a goal to each side early in the second quarter, Pimpinio kicked three straight before an Andy Devereaux goal for Kalkee brought it to 33-25 at half-time to Pimpinio.
An early Ben Lawson goal in the third made it a two-point game, but two goals from Pimpinio allowed them to extend their lead to 47-33 at the final break.
A gritty final quarter was played out by both teams where, despite chances for both sides, no goals were scored as Pimpinio finished 12-point winners.
For Pimpinio, Matthew Rosier was one of the best on the ground, assisted well by brothers Adam and Jason Westley.
For the home team, midfielder Karl Campbell and Patrick Mills were impressive.
Jason Westley led all scorers with three goals, while Andy Devereaux and Ben Lawson each kicked two for Kalkee.
Guy Smith, coach of Pimpinio, said the conditions made it tricky to utilise their usual play styles, identifying an all-important second quarter as having helped to set up the game for the Tigers.
“We knew that with the conditions, we couldn't play any form or style that we would want to play," Smith said.
“It was just full-on classic British bulldog backyard footy, it was.
“It was very much kick the ball on and just chase and get the numbers to the fall of the ball, and just keep it moving forward.
“I think it was pretty much our second quarter that probably set us up, because the first quarter, Kalkee capitalised on their shots and we didn't.
“But our second quarter was a lot better.
“We got in front and then we just clawed away at it from there.”
Smith identified Adam Westley and Matthew Rosier as key players in the victory.
“Adam Westley, he had a day out – he played really well," he said.
“He was at the fall of the ball and moved the ball forward for us a lot.
“Matty Rosier, he just handled the ball impeccably.”
