Pimpinio aim to lock in third against Swifts
Pimpinio coach Guy Smith says his side will treat their round 18 clash against the Swifts like a finals game this Saturday as they look to cement third spot on the seniors football ladder.
The Tigers are currently in third with 11 wins, one clear of fourth-placed Kaniva Leeor, but with a lower percentage than the Cougars, a Kaniva Leeor victory over Harrow Balmoral would push Pimpinio to fourth if they are unable to overcome the Swifts on Saturday.
Pimpinio won their previous encounter in round seven 62-45 but they go against a Swifts side playing at home and with nothing to lose.
While the Swifts are still a chance of making finals they would require Rupanyup to upset Laharum while winning their own clash with Pimpinio.
Smith said he expected the Swifts to come out hard for the last round of the home-and-away season.
“We're treating it as a mini final because we need to keep that third spot,” Smith said.
“We reckon they'll come at us, especially being their last home-and-away game, so they'll throw everything at us just to create an upset.
“So we're going to treat it as a mini final and make sure we secure that third spot.”
The Tigers enter Saturday coming off a round 17 bye, helping the side with its availability leading into finals.
Smith said the break had also allowed the team to take lessons from their round 16 loss to Harrow Balmoral.
“The focus has actually been getting our full list of players because our side's just been like a revolving door all year and it's ironic that our last home-and-away game we're actually going to have our full squad to pick from,” Smith said.
“The team's up and about, they're pretty keen, and the final series being just around the corner, I think most of the guys are chafing at the bit to really test themselves and forget about what's happened with Harrow, because that home-and-away game, they got on top of us.
“We didn't play that well; they just played it unreal – we couldn't do anything about it.
“We've learned from it so we'll take some positives out of what they did with our game and implement it with our own sort of platform, which would be good.
"We'll put it to a test and, with a full list, hopefully we get on top.”
