“Shout out” is a public expression of greeting, praise or acknowledgement directed towards a person or group.
Many Australian teenagers are giving a “shout out” to Taylor Swift who is coming to Australia in February next year.
A “shout out” must be given to the West Coast Eagles, who would have to be the most patient AFL club in the competition - they are doing the opposite to other clubs and backing coach Adam Simpson which is refreshing - watch this space.
A “shout out” to the Melbourne Vixens - their 2023 season has come to an end. They were beaten by the reigning premiers, West Coast Fever. Jamaican superstar Jhaniele Fowler shot a cool 55 goals from 56 attempts.
There is much to “shout out” about too when you belong to the Giants’ Football and Netball Club, and Saturday’s games at Beulah against Stawell were no exception.
Five things to “shout out” about:
1. Emma Mill, the brains behind the mentoring program that took place on Saturday. Emma organised for each senior player to be buddied up with a junior player based on positions and personality. The junior girls stood tall with the support and mentoring they received before, during and after their games on Saturday. A truly wonderful initiative.
2. Continued growth in our junior sides. The U13 and U15 teams received the Mercy Rule against Stawell in round one earlier in the season. This didn’t happen a second time.
3. Coach Jaimee O’Reilly and the B-grade girls. The last time the girls played Stawell, the team shot 22 goals. They shot 34 on Saturday - their highest goal tally for the year.
4. The food. When your teenage daughter makes comments like “Gee, we get fed well”, acknowledgement must be made to our catering teams in Beulah and Hopetoun. A big shout out to Amanda, Darren, Lauren, Jacob, Bruce, Kat, Cherie, Patto, Mel and Nick who keep us fed on Wednesday nights and Saturdays. Huge jobs that begin two weeks prior to the actual training night or game day with menu planning, food ordering, shopping, phone calls, messages, cooking, cleaning and countless trips in and out to the footy sheds from their respective farms, the list is endless. Taking your turn on the kitchen roster or putting your hand up for an extra shift is quite a simple task in comparison to what these leaders are doing, week in week out.
5. Lauren Hallam, Amanda Marshman and Jo Credlin are what makes the Giants the club that it is. Without fuss, Jo stepped up when needed, happily doing a double shift in the kitchen with a smile on her face. Amanda Marshman casually whipped up 25 litres of amazing vegetable soup, going above and beyond what was asked of her. Lauren Hallam arrived in the kitchen at 8am on Saturday morning to start a day that stretched well into the evening, with minimal breaks. Not only did Lauren run the kitchen on Saturday, she was also the team leader for Saturday night’s meal at the sheds.
A Grade
Round 10 brought us back to face up against Stawell Warriors, this time in the Beulah sunshine and wind.
The team came out firing, with Jaimee O’Reilly, Olivia Revell and Taya Horman working hard in defence and managing some amazing intercepts.
The attacking end kept the ball moving into the ring with great direction from Jodie Hayes.
The team managed to keep Stawell’s score low by putting pressure on their mid court, only being one goal down at half time.
The third quarter was a tougher one for the girls and Stawell took the lead.
Changes in the fourth quarter saw Ruby Fisher step into goals for the first time this year, with Steph Thomson. Both girls worked hard to play catch up on Stawell.
A great team effort by all, no win today.

B Grade
The ladies played hard and never gave up.
Tara and Keeta had great hands on the ball in the first quarter.
It was windy at times, making accurate passing more difficult.
Jaida and Seisha picked up the pace in the second quarter, making excellent intercepts in defence.
The third quarter was a slower and quieter pace, which we worked on in the final quarter. Keeta had rebounds and hands on lots.
Pressure over the ball caused turnovers by the Giants. Kim’s pressure in the mid court was great, Issy settled and was hitting long shots.
Kat was consistent throughout the whole game, whilst Jonti held well. Tara showed a settled presence when thrown into Wing Attack.
Final score: Stawell 52, Giants 34

C Grade
The girls worked hard against a well-oiled Stawell side this week, staying positive and working as a team.
Strong encouragement, advice and cheering from our younger buddies on the sidelines, who we had mentored earlier in the day, kept the girls on task and motivated.
Kiara O’Reilly’s new haircut allowed her to move around the court with speed, nothing was holding her back.
Cathy Moore continued to be the dependable attacking player that we know she is.
The team would like to thank Ally Bull for her contribution, and wish her well on her move.

In round one, the girls were mercy ruled, this time however, no mercy rule in sight and a display of improved skills, teamwork and confidence. What added to the day was the mentoring from our senior Giants. Our girls were buoyed by their presence and feedback. Thank you to our senior Giants for making it an extra special day for our junior girls.
Under 15’s
Another new face to the team, we warmly welcomed Charlotte McPherson into our Giant’s nest.
Issy and Rachael found space in the ring and are reading each other well to finish off with some great goals.
Coco, Lana and Elsa worked hard in the midcourt, their drive to the ball and strong passes led to some impressive passages of play.
Charlotte and Alynah, who had not played with each other in defence prior to the day, worked well to set up some handy intercepts and get the ball back into attack.
Thank you to Lily, Leah and Luca who all had a taste of stepping up to U15 ‘s netball and did not look out of place.

Under 13’s
Leah, Ava and Bianca rotated well in the ring, and used their feeders to get closer to the post, resulting in some great goals.
Lily and Pippa attacked well down the court, clearing, driving, finding the space and delivering beautifully to the goalies.
Dakota, Luka, Elka and Olivia have worked hard at training and acted on feedback to improve their defensive set ups and it’s paying off on game day.

Net Set Go
We were fortunate to have plenty of girls available this week and were able to rotate two complete teams on and off the court each quarter.
Our Stawell opponents were older and taller, but everyone played some good passages of netball and used their voices well. A great six quarters of netball girls.
