Participation plan to boost volunteering
A transformative 10-year Regional Participation Action Plan has been developed by the Community Drivers Group, with support by the Centre of Participation, which reimagines the ways individuals can contribute to strengthen social connections and foster inclusion.
Volunteering has always been an essential part of Australia’s social fabric, supporting cohesion and resilience, however, traditional approaches to volunteering are showing limitations, with formal structures often struggling to meet the needs of contemporary society.
Rooted in Australia’s colonial past, volunteering is an invaluable practice, but the complexities of modern life call for a broader, more flexible concept—community participation.
Participation differs from volunteering by encompassing a wider range of activities, including informal contributions and civic engagement. It is designed to be flexible, inclusive, and responsive, recognising the time constraints and diverse needs of individuals today.
Opportunities for participation can adapt to align with people’s lifestyles, interests, and availability, enabling them to engage meaningfully in ways that work for them.
The Regional Participation Action Plan addresses declining volunteer rates, time-poor lifestyles, and burnout among active community members, have underscored the need to rethink traditional models.
Over-reliance on a small pool of dedicated individuals has highlighted the importance of recruiting and supporting new participants to ensure sustainability.
Additionally, engaging diverse groups effectively requires tailored communication strategies and tools to reach all segments of the community.
The plan outlines innovative solutions to these challenges including embedding participation values into education can inspire young people to engage early, building lifelong habits of contribution.
Incentives such as the Horsham Agricultural Society offering free camping at Maydale Reserve in exchange for volunteer event support demonstrate creative ways to attract and motivate people.
Providing training, resources and practical support like transport and recruitment checks ensures that participation opportunities are accessible to everyone.
This plan represents a collaborative effort to create a more inclusive and adaptable model for community engagement.
