If you're angling for a spot of fishing at the weekend, you won't have far to travel in search of pan-sized rainbow trout.
Fisheries Victoria Authority has introduced ready-to-catch trout to waterways throughout the state, including five in the Wimmera and southern Mallee.
Murtoa’s Marma Lake (350 fish), Horsham’s Police Paddock Dams (450), Rainbow Lake (400), Yaapeet's Turkey Bottom Lake (200) and Birchip’s Tchum Lake (1000) have all received plentiful supplies.
Fish stocking is funded by recreational fishing licence fees and the Victorian Government's Go Fishing Victoria plan to encourage more people to fish more often.
The newly released rainbow trout are advanced yearlings suitable to be caught immediately.
For children or those trying fishing for the first time, this species is a good option as it's relatively easy to catch and takes a variety of baits and lures.
That doesn't mean it's okay to overfish the lakes and rivers, however - the bag limit for trout is five per day, only two of which can be longer than 35cm.
In coming months Rupanyup’s Jack Emmett Lagoon (350 fish), Nhill Lake (200), and Minyip Wetland (200) will receive a delivery of rainbow trout, while Rainbow, Yaapeet, Murtoa, Horsham and Birchip will receive a top-up ahead of summer.
