Horsham landowners on the urban water supply network will soon have the opportunity to use recycled water for pasture, vineyard or food crop irrigation as a new "SmartWater" pipeline takes shape to the northwest of the CBD.
GWM is to build a series of pipelines allowing Horsham Rural City Council to use recycled water at the racecourse, cemetery, sports ovals and Langlands Park.
A tender has been awarded to Shepparton-based Girdwood Contracting as part of the Horsham Agriculture SmartWater and Integrated Water Management Project.
Once constructed, the pipeline will run along the Wimmera Highway from Rudolphs Road to the Horsham Racecourse, as well as north along Curran Road to the Aerodrome, Langlands Park and Blue Ribbon Road.
GWMWater managing director Mark Williams said the project would improve the quality of and access to recycled water, opening up more opportunities for reuse.
“Upgrades at the Horsham Wastewater Treatment Plant are now underway and once that work is completed, the quality of recycled water produced will improve,” he said.
“The pipeline will enable access to recycled water for spaces like the racecourse, cemetery, sports ovals and Langlands Park, that usually rely on drinking water or a small volume of stormwater for irrigation purposes.”
Landowners close to the pipeline and the Horsham Wastewater Treatment Plant will have the opportunity to submit proposals for the purchase and reuse of recycled water.

Construction will start in June and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
