The new netball changerooms at the Rainbow Recreation Reserve were officially opened last week, with a number of special guests in attendence celebrating the decade-long project’s completion.
Jeparit Rainbow Football Netball Club director of netball Ebony Spokes praised the efforts of her predecessors in getting the project up and running, with the new building incorperating a first-aid room with improved access for emergency vehicles, space for netball teams to change and store their gear, as well as facilities that visitors to the caravan park can access during the off-season.
The opening was attended by Hindmarsh Shire councillors Ron Ismay and Rob Gersch, and mayor Cr Brett Ireland, who spoke of the long and challenging project over several years from the first plans to the completion of the building.
When the netball courts were rebuilt, one in 2005, the other a few years later, the Rainbow Recreation Reserve committee began making plans to build new netball facilities to replace the old, original, change rooms located over 150m from the courts, which were in disrepair.
Work began on the site in April last year, with funding from a number of sectors including Sport & Recreation Victoria’s Female Friendly Facilities program, the federal government’s Local Roads & Community Infrastructure program, Hindmarsh Shire Council, Rainbow Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, and the Jeparit Rainbow Football Netball Club.
The new changerooms were officially opened by Member for Mallee Dr Anne Webster, who said sporting clubs were the heart and soul of small towns in her electorate.
She was very pleased to be able to get to Rainbow to open this vital new facility, and joined Cr Ireland in unveiling a plaque commemorating the occasion.
