Native plants get green thumbs up

The Wimmera Growers of Australian Plants (SGAP) meeting in Warracknabeal last Thursday attracted considerable interest and a large local audience.
Held at the Town Hall Supper Room, the topic for the evening was "Establishing a Native Australian Garden."
After group president Graham Goods, welcomed visitors, members of the Wimmera SGAP conducted the business of the night, which covered topics such as soil preparation, watering systems and small Australian plants suitable for suburban gardens.
The prizes for the raffles were a choice of Australian plants, and a variety of native plants were available for sale after the meeting.
The specimen table of local Australian plants in flower included a range of grevilleas, acacias, correas, Hakeas and eucalypts - the collection was quite large, considering this time of the year is a leaner one for native flowering plants.
Featuring amongst the specimens were examples of the trees in Scott Street (Corimbya Ficifolia), some of which are currently flowering with spectacular soft pink and red flowers, several Eucalyptus Ericifolia (Red Cap Gums) which can be seen around the town, including at Anzac Park, and are also quite spectacular while in flower.
Memberships were due on the night and the group welcomed several new members, before concluding the evening by sharing supper and a chat.
The Wimmera group includes members from Horsham and surrounding districts such as Pimpinio, Laharum, Zumsteins and Hopetoun.
