Natimuk community gathers on Australia Day
Around 150 people gathered in Natimuk to mark Australia Day, sharing breakfast, reflection, and community spirit under the shade at the Community Centre.
Official proceedings began with a welcome from Horsham Rural City Council mayor Brian Klowss, followed by the raising of the Australian Flag by RSL President Rob Ellis and the mayor's address.
Cr Klowss said Australia Day was a time to come together, pause, and reflect.
"But first, I want to thank everyone, the Lions Club for the breakfast, and the volunteers who have worked together to make this such a marvellous and welcoming event," he said.
Cr Klowss acknowledged that Australia Day can have different meanings for people: while some celebrate it with pride, others may see it as a time to reflect.
"We appreciate the complexities of the day, but we all acknowledge the strength and the sense of unity we share, especially this year as the recent fires test our resolve," he said.
The mayor paid a heartfelt tribute to the emergency services, volunteers, community members, and everyone who rose to the challenge on January 9 as the fire bore down on the communities of Natimuk, Quantong, and Vectis.
"With courage and determination, you did whatever had to be done to protect our communities and have continued to look after each other who have lost so much and face uncertainty as we enter the recovery process," he said.
"You faced the toughest of challenges with outstanding tenacity."
Cr Klowss said Australia was enriched by its diversity, and that looking ahead means the opportunity to build an Australia that shows fairness and respect for one another.
"With our shared values, we should show empathy, resilience, and opportunity as we listen, learn, and grow," he said.
"I wish you all a Happy Australia Day with family, friends, and community."
Natumuk resident Emilee Jones-Pritchard sang the National Anthem, and RSL secretary Robert Grant provided insight into the RSL and Natimuk.
Di's cafe at the Courthouse provided free tea and coffee, plus free fruit, Zooper Doopers, and Giant Games to play.
