Millar marvels on day one
A brilliant innings from the Colts’ Logan Millar was the highlight of day one action in round 13 of the Horsham Cricket Association A grade competition on Saturday, February 21.
Playing at Dudley Cornell Park, the Colts elected to bat against Laharum but found themselves in early trouble at 2/21.
Logan Millar and Josh Colbert (23) settled the home side’s innings with a 96-run partnership before Luke Deutscher joined Millar with some big hitting, launching five sixes in his quickfire 59 from 46 balls.
Despite battling an injured leg, Millar reached the century milestone, eventually dismissed for 126, which included 23 boundaries.
Joey Nagorcka (26) added some late-innings resistance for the Colts before the side was bowled out for 286.
Joel Pymer led Laharum with 4/57 with the ball, while Josh Hutchinson had 3/34.
Hutchinson (1 not out) and Daniel Griffiths (9 not out) then survived the final four overs of the day for the Demons and will resume day two at 0/15.
Wimmera Mallee News spoke with Logan Millar after his innings, who admitted it was the most comfortable he has felt at the crease all season.
“It’s probably the first time this year that I’ve seen the ball half-OK,” Millar said.
“Finally got some out of the middle, which was good.
While happy with his century, Miller admitted it would have been smarter not to play, considering he recently sustained an injury.
“I did my achilles at footy training a couple of weeks ago, so I shouldn’t be playing, honestly.”
The battle for top spot between West Wimmera and the Bullants remains firmly in the balance after day one.
The Warriors elected to bat at Quantong Recreation Reserve, and after a steady 46-run opening partnership between Brad Alexander and Brett Jensz, three quick wickets gave the Bullants momentum.
But a disciplined 78 from Brad Alexander, with support from Bailey McQueen (35), and a late-order 15 not out from Xavier Bone helped the Warriors to a total of 185.
Spinner Justtin Combe tore through the middle and lower order to take 6/36, while Jack Combe had 2/28.
After surviving 13 of the remaining 14 overs of day one play, Jeremy Weeks dismissed Matthew Combe in the final over to leave the Bullants 1/16 at stumps.
At Jeffcott Oval, Brim KSH elected to bat but struggled early, finding it difficult to score runs as they fell to 4/23 in the 14th over.
A critical 79-run partnership between Isaac McPherson and Fletcher Bright (34) helped reset the Eagles’ innings, with McPherson eventually falling for 75 before his side was dismissed for 156 late in the day.
For Donald Jeffcott, Cooper Anderson led the way with 5/35 from 19 overs, while Nicholas Atkins had 2/21.
Anderson (10 not out) and Dylan Ruurds (8 not out) saw the home side reach 0/18 at stumps.
At Central Park in Stawell, Swifts-Great Western elected to bowl against the Tigers, and the decision appeared correct when three quick wickets left the visitors at 3/25.
As was the case in other games, a key middle-order partnership saved the innings, as skipper Tyler Puls (60) and Adam Carter (37) put on 100 runs together.
The bowling partnership of Ethan and Zachary Marrow produced 5/4 in a matter of overs before Marty Knight (17 not out) helped the Tigers reach 150.
Ethan Marrow finished with 4/14, while Jayden McCartney (2/14), Matt Heffer (2/17) and Zachary Marrow (2/42) each took two wickets.
Two early wickets from David Puls (2/20) had the Combine on the back foot early in their innings, before big-hitting innings from Jacob Dunn (52 from 40) and Zachary Marrow (41 from 25) saw the runs quickly flow for the home side.
Swifts-Great Western reached 4/111 at stumps, where Jesse Eckel (5 not out) and Max McMahon (2 not out).
At Murtoa Recreation Reserve, St Mary’s elected to bat against the Mudlarks, who had the visitors at 3/21 early.
But strong middle-order innings from Nathan Priest (49), Kael Zanker (46) and Lincoln Westerland (43), as well as 27 from Nicholas Germano, helped St Mary’s produce one of their best batting performances, as they were eventually bowled out for 210.
Oliver Garth Lindsay led Lubeck Murtoa with 5/42 from 17 overs, while Finnina Delahunty helped bowl the visitors out to finish with 2/3.
The Mudlarks will resume day two at 0/3 after surviving one over at the end of the day.
