If you haven't already visited Rainbow's Turbo Gallery this month, you have 10 days left to see Shirley Newton's amazing exhibition of paintings, which ends on July 30.
Over 60 people attended the July 7 opening of Turbo Gallery's latest exhibition featuring a collection from local artist Shirley Newton.
Shirley began painting at the age of 62, but her work has quickly become popular, with seven of the paintings selling at the official opening.
Many members of Shirley's extended family and friends were present to celebrate her accomplishment.
Her works feature many different topics including streetscapes, landscapes, birds and flowers.
Shirley thanked everyone for attending her first solo exhibition and gave us an insight into her work.
“I thought of learning the piano as I had no idea if I could draw or paint,"then art started up in Rainbow under Des Owen and I was invited by friends to join up," she said.
"It was a wonderful time and I made many new friends and fond memories.
"I like painting, it is great to enjoy life; conversation and story telling with a paint brush in my hand.
"My favourite artists are Hans Heysen and Frederick McCubbin.”
Gallery director Belinda Eckermann thanked everyone for attending and Shirley for agreeing to have her works exhibited, and said it was a bit of a rush to get the exhibition up and running in a two-week time frame.
“I wish to also thank Steve Newton for asking Shirley to come, David Newton for assisting with labelling, John Roth for building the new gallery wall, Sarah Cusani for assisting with painting and Julie McLean for cleaning up before the opening."
