In what could only be described as a perfect day in “Jeparadise”, 17 players turned up for a day of golf playing Captain’s Choice.
Club captain Mel Wagener chose to play Stableford with a twist - being that once you were on the sandscrape, add one stroke and pick up.
This really suited the power hitters that could land on the scrape in two or three strokes, whereas the poor old weaklings who depend on their putts saving their score, suffered.
We did have a lot of fun though.
The Men’s winner was Paul “Sherlock” Holmes on 50 points, and whilst there was a few grumbles about “shifty 50 and Shylock” all was above board and that’s a great score anyday.
Runner-up on a countback, on 47 points, was Glen “Trevi” Treverton - bad luck, Dehne Charry.
The Ladies’ winner was Jen “Wren” Bell on 40 points.
(Just as an aside, myself and Dennis Kavanagh played with Jen and where she had 24 points on the back nine, we could only rake up 23 between us.
Wendy Schulze was runner-up on 38 points.
The Archie Bell Award for “I’ve had a dog of a day” went to Dennis ”Kennel” Kavanagh and Fiona “Fi” Williams.
Because of the game format there were no other prizes on the day, but as this scribe left out some last week, here they are in retrospect.
Monthly Medal Winners were Beth Preston and Mickey Millar and nearest the pins went to Col “The Consistent” Moore on the 3rd, Tony “The Pres” Foley on the 5th and Peter “Pea Bo” Newcombe on the 12th.
The club had further great news as Beth “Bethy” Preston won the Division 2 Nett 36 event in the Victorian Sandscrape Championships held at Talbot - well done Beth!
Next week is Two-Person Stableford and all players will be drawn out of a hat, so who knows who you will accompany around. Should be a fun day.
