Lions hit one million containers in recycling milestone
Dimboola Lions Club have now collected more than one million containers as part of the Container Deposit Scheme, putting thousands back into the local community.
The machine, located at the Lions Depot on Hindmarsh Street, Dimboola, was first introduced in November 2023.
In its first three months of operation, the site collected 250,000 bottles and cans.
They have provided the community with an accessible and effective way to recycle eligible drink containers, reducing litter and promoting sustainable practices.
TOMRA Cleanaway chief executive James Dorney said they are thrilled to recognise the Lions Club for its milestone achievement.
“Their dedication to recycling and sustainability exemplifies the power of community-driven action in creating a cleaner, greener Victoria," he said.
"Every container returned through the CDS Vic refund point is a step toward reducing waste and fostering a circular economy, and we are proud to have the Dimboola Lions Club as a partner in this effort.”
The initiative is also supported by Dimboola IGA, the local redemption partner in town, where residents can redeem their refund vouchers for cash or a discount on their grocery shop.
Local organisations are encouraged to contact the Dimboola Lions Club to complete the grant funds document, allowing the committee to continue allocating funds back into the community.
The Dimboola Lions Club has also been successful in securing a $14,679 grant from the Murra Warra Wind Farm Grant Fund for their public place container deposit collections program.
Member La Vergne Lehmann said they were thrilled to receive the grant.
“The Dimboola Lions have a long history of focusing on recycling, and what we do know is that if we make it easy for people to recycle, then we get a better result," she said.
"This grant will help us make it easier for people to recycle their cans and bottles in recognisable bins at various locations in Dimboola and at events."
