Lions Clubs recap busy year

The Brim and Warracknabeal Lions Clubs held their annual Changeover Dinner on Wednesday night, inducting seven new Lions and welcoming District Governor Max Ford to the gathering.

The Brim Lions Club has been hard at work with the ongoing maintenance of the town’s cemetery and Redda’s Park, where volunteers have been hard at work mowing and keeping the places looking neat and tidy, and manning the gate when football is played in Brim.
The club is still collecting newspapers for recycling, which president Max Golder said is financially rewarding, and reported a steady flow of campers to the town.
The club has also been busy at the weir pool, with the installation of more solar panels for caravans and the refurbishment of the showers, and the weir pool had a natural flow late last year which provided a wetlands area to the south.
Three members of the Brim Lions Club are involved in the Lions Eye health program which aims to provide a program to ensure children receive vision checks, and educate adults on the causes of eyesight loss.
The Warracknabeal Lions Club were devastated when three of the Lions’ Park wallabies were mauled to death last year and president Maurie Parsons said they still have no answer for “who or what committed this horrible act of cruelty.”
“Since this happened, the club has been offered donations from other clubs and organisations to get some more animals into the enclosure,” Mr Parsons said.
“We are grateful, and thank them for their generosity.”
The club held a meeting with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (now DECCA) prior to the expected November floods and made ready the park and animals.
“This is the town’s major tourist attraction,” Mr Parsons said.
“It’s looking great, and a huge thanks to all Lions for giving up hours of their time to keep the park and animals in excellent condition.
“Extra cages will be refurbished in the next few months.”
The organisers and volunteers for the monthly Lions’ market, the maintenance of the Warracknabeal cemetery, the catering, races and wood raffles were also acknowledged for their hard work and contribution to the club and community.
The Warracknabeal Club also donated $1000 to the District Governors Appeal.
Both club presidents thanked their treasurers and secretaries for their assistance over the past year.
"I would like to thank secretary Matt and treasurer Aaron for the work they do making my job so easy,” Mr Golder said.
“Lion Gil, many thanks for committing yourself to this job,” Mr Parsons said.
“It had its ups and downs this year - mainly finding a new bank -but you have done a great job and I thank you very much.
“Lion Emma, another superb job you have done this year (as secretary) - huge thank you for all you do.”
The Brim Club welcomed their four new members: Shane Wardle, Col McPherson, Nadine Jenkinson and Trish Heinrich, and Warracknabeal welcomed Allan, Dovo and Jo.
