Last of winter bowls with full field

The Winter Bowls competition tnrough the North Wimmera area has concluded with a full field at the Warrack Golf Bowls club on Tuesday.
For Hopetoun, Beulah, Brim, Warracknabeal and Warrack Golf, it has been quite successful over the winter months with only a couple of cancelled days due to weather conditions, and all clubs well supported. With the pennant season starting next week, bowlers who have played in the winter event will be primed and ready for the coming season.
The big field enjoyed a beautiful afternoon sun, playing three games of eight ends in a 242 format. The flies were the only problem on the day, which seems to be the norm where ever you go, and a spray that's keeps them at bay all the time has not been found yet, to my knowledge. If anybody has the answer please let it be known.
Minyip member Christine O'Connell and local Josh Barry played well together for the first time to win the day with a draw and two wins. The draw in the first game with Christine Gunn and Bill Kerr incurred 4 ends each and 7 shots each. Game two was improved winning 5 ends, 12 shots to 5 against Gayle Arnold and Brian Taylor. Game three was even better, with seven ends won, 12 shots to 1 and 27 points.
Runners up went to Ken (two bob) Schilling with partner Calvin Pendlebury having a win and two draws, 55.5 points. Ken continues to bowl well with his bowling arm, and capped off the day with a win of the Warrack Butchery meat voucher.
A close third on 54.5 points , Dawn Walton and Brian Gunn, followed by Golf's veteran badge recipient Rob Taylor and Hopetoun entrant Deb Treadwell, winning two games, 51.5 points in fourth position.
All the 14 teams had at least one win, and in the first game there were four teams having a draw, with two on a draw in round three, thus emphasizing the closeness of the competition. Thanks to all the players who represented their clubs over the last few months.
A big thank you to our Major sponsor of our Winter Bowls Event in the National Hotel Motel in Bendigo, supplying a night's accommodation and breakfast for two, over 20 years or more, which is very much appreciated by our members.
Sadly I think the business has been sold, but we look forward to another sponsor of this special event during the off season of bowls.
The winner of the Major Prize, drawn by club president Dawn Walton, went to one of the longest bowling members of the Warracknabeal area in Graeme Shalders, who has represented the winter competition very well over the years.
Congratulations Graeme. It will be interesting to see who the lucky person fills the vacant spot. Everybody's hand will be up.
The Warrack Butchery has supplied our vouchers each game and a big thank you to them. Also to Brian Gunn and Dawn Walton on the excellent running of the event, Mary Ginnane on the raffle organizing, and to all the Golf members who helped out in any way. The club surrounds look a treat for the upcoming pennant season. Thanks to Clicker and surround staff.
Club members don't forget to enter yourselves in upcoming events which are on the notice board. There are five bowls events happening starting Saturday morning to the following Saturday afternoon, so be prepared and check.
Treasurer Wayne Gove is taking memberships before the first pennant game on Tuesday 3rd Midweek against Warracknabeal in town, followed by Saturday 7th Division One away to Rupanyup, and Division Two at Home to Warracknabeal.
